All too often we hear of the detrimental effects caused by burst pipes during the colder winter months. Not only can this prove a costly expense, the inconvenience and damage will doubtless cause unwanted stress.

- Keep the heating on a low temperature is probably the most effective way to prevent a burst pipe. 21 degrees is a good average temperature.
- Home owners, who are planning to leave their property for a long period, should consider draining the central heating system and water pipes. Damage from a burst pipe can be minimised if there is no water in the pipes.
- Regular servicing of your boiler will ensure it is kept in good working order. Home owners should avoid a breakdown during the colder months so that pipes are not left vulnerable during extremely low temperatures.
- Locating the water stop tap and ensuring it is working properly will enable you to turn off excess water without delay.
- Exposed water tanks or pipes in the loft can be insulated at a reasonable low cost. Contact a local plumber to undertake the work.
